Shawarma is a mouthwatering Middle Eastern dish featuring marinated and grilled chicken wrapped in soft pita bread.
Ingredients :
- 1.5 lbs (680g) boneless, skinless chicken (thinly sliced)
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 4 cloves of garlic (minced)
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, adjust to your spice preference)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Pita bread or flatbread
- Hummus
- Tahini sauce
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced cucumbers
- Sliced onions
- Pickles
- Fresh parsley (chopped)
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix together yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Add the sliced chicken to the mixture, making sure it’s well-coated. Cover the bowl and let it marinate in the fridge for at least 1-2 hours, or preferably overnight, to let the flavors mix.
- Preheat your grill or a pan on medium-high heat. If using a pan, you may need to add a bit of oil to prevent sticking.
- Cook the marinated chicken on the grill or in the pan for about 5-6 minutes per side, or until the chicken is fully cooked through and has a nice charred outside.
- While the chicken is cooking, warm the pita bread or flatbread.
- Once the chicken is done, take it off the heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
- To serve, spread a good amount of hummus on the warmed pita bread. Top with the grilled chicken, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, pickles, and chopped parsley. Drizzle some tahini sauce over the top.
- Fold the pita over the fillings to make a wrap, and your Chicken Shawarma is ready to enjoy!
