Jansson’s Temptation is a traditional Swedish casserole dish. It is a popular and beloved dish in Sweden, especially during the holiday season and other festive occasions
Ingredients :
- 800 grams (1.7 lbs) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 200 grams (7 oz) pickled sprats or anchovies, drained and chopped (you can adjust the amount to your taste)
- 200 ml (about 3/4 cup) heavy cream
- 100 ml (about 1/3 cup) vegetable or fish broth
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions For Jansson’s Temptation :
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they become soft and translucent.
- Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Begin layering the ingredients in the baking dish. Start with a layer of potatoes, followed by a layer of onions, and then a layer of the chopped pickled sprats or anchovies. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Continue layering the ingredients until you’ve used them all up, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top.
- In a small bowl, mix the heavy cream and fish or vegetable broth together. Pour this mixture over the layers in the baking dish.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven.
- Bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the potatoes are tender and the top has turned golden brown.
- Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking to allow the top to get crispy.
- Once done, take the Jansson’s Temptation out of the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
